Missions[ | ]

Companions in Chernobylite form a core aspect of progression and survival. There are 5 companions to be recruited: Olivier, Mikhail, Olga, Tarakan, and Sashko. Olivier is with the player from the start of the game, and other companions are gained through completing story missions. The main function of companions is to send out on missions along with the player. Companions can be sent out on any mission, and have a given percent chance to complete that mission successfully. Should a companion successfully complete a resource mission they will return with the objective resource and some location specific resources, should they fail they will return with only a small amount of resources either location specific or relating to the objective. Sending a companion on a story mission will not complete the story mission, and will only reduce the number of hostiles, making it easier for the player to complete. If a companion fails a mission they will return with damaged health and psyche. If a companion fails a mission while their psyche or health is too low, they can be captured by the NAR. This will be shown as the companion going missing. The player can intentionally die within a mission to go to the prison and break the companion out.

Reputation and Companion Survival[ | ]

When doing story missions, the player will often be given choices on how to complete certain objectives. Often companions will give input on how they believe the player should go about these choices. Choosing against a companion will cause their opinion of the player to drop, and vice versa for choosing with a companion. If a companion's opinion of Igor gets too low, they will permanently abandon the player. Companions also need to be fed at the end of every mission. If a companion gets less than 1 food ration their health and psyche will drop. If they are given less than 1 food ration after successfully completing a mission their opinion of you will decrease. If a companion is given greater than or equal to 1 food ration their health and psyche will increase accordingly.

Skills[ | ]

Doing missions, finding points of interest, killing enemies and scavenging give the player xp. When the player gets enough xp they level up, and gain one skill point. Each companion has 5 different skills that they can train for the player in exchange for skill points. Each companion has one unique skill and two separate two-step skills, the first one giving a bonus and the second one increasing that bonus.
